SOUTH AFRICAN WAR PENSIONS

Discussing South African war pensions at the S.A.W.V. Association's conference to-day, the Dominion president (Mr. J. J. Clark) said that there was little hope of getting a. pension by right of service, as had been done with Maori "War veterans, in the case of whom the Minister considered that a mistake had been made in granting pensions irrespective of circumstances. One Maori War pensioner, though worth about a quarter of a-million, still drew tho Maori War pension. Being a generous man, he probably gave it away thousands of times in a year, but it was a case always cited. The Minister had, however, increased the addition to tho old ago pension to £26 a-yoM" to S.A. veterans.
