UNDER A NEW FLAG

BRAZILIAN STEAMERS IN PORT.

Bound from Newcastle to Bio de Janeiro, two Brazilian passenger steamers, the Dom Pedro I. and Dom Pedro 11., arrived at Wellington over the week end. They were recently purchased from the A.U.S.N. Co. in Australia by the Lloyd Brazileiro, and formerly were known as the Wyreema and Levuka. The Lloyd Brazileiro is a wealthy concern, and owns a big fleet of steamers, many of which trade to European and other distant ports.

After taking in coal, water, and stores, the two vessels will sail about Wednesday for Rio do Janeiro. The Dom Pedro I. is in command of Captain L. Bahiana, and has a crew of 07 all told. Both ships are to be placed in the Brazilian coastal passenger service. They are quite up to date in every re--spect, having very fine passenger accommodation, and being fitted with hydraulic cranes and wireless.
