CHILD'S DEATH IN HOSPITAL

CHEISTCHUECH, 22nd August.
The ■ adjourned inquest concerning the death of Stewart Jan.es Eennic, aged five, was concluded to-day. Tho child was taken suddenly ill on 25th July, and died under an anaesthetic.
Dr. Sandston stated that he was called by Dr. Johnston to attend the child, who was almost unconscious when he arrived. Eespiration was difficult, and clearly the child could not live more than a few hours without surgical aid. It was suffering from acute inflammation and obstruction to the throat. An operation was necessary,. although attended by grave risk. After a few inhalations of chloroform the patient stopped breathing. The throat was opened immediately, but the child did not revive. Bacteriological examination showed that there was no diphtheria. Death was duo to acute inflammation of the larynx.
A verdict was returned accordingly
