A VALUABLE SUGGESTION
(To tho Editor.)
Sir,—ln your Thursday's article on the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill, you urged the defenders of the national system of education to be up and doing, and to educate the public as to the insidious nature of the assault being made on that system that advice should be taken to heart by those who, like myself, believe that any interference with the three esKential 'principles of the Education Act should be resented, and that steps should be _ taken immediately to frustrate the action of the declared enemies of the national scheme. In the small hours of Thursday morning, Mr; Isitt made it abundantly plain that his Bill had been scotched, but not killed, and that ho intended to persevere until his efforts are crowned by success. I admire hig courage, but am unable to follow or appreciate Ins arguments. We shall doubtless hear a great deal from him during the recess, and it therefore behovea the upholders of the syster- to repel every attack he makes on our citadel. The best means of doing bo, it Beemß to me, is to follow the lead of Auckland and set up branches of the Xational Schools Defence League all over the Dominion.
-May I be allowed to congratulate you, Mr. Editor, on having published in extenso the evidence given before the Education Committee of the Legislative Council by the Director of Education? Coming from a strong churchman and a life -worker in the Sunday schools of his own church, it constituted one of the fairest yet most convincing criticisms of Mr. latt'g Bill that I have ever read. And you, Sir, are to be complimented on the outspokenness of your editorial on Thursday. It is in marked contrast to tho sinuter silence of both your morning contemporaries on -what was the most live topic of discussion this session.—l am, etc
