At an inquiry into the driverless train accident at Newcastle, the evidence showed that the. control, handle of the electric train had been tied with a handkerchief, ■ apparently belonging to the driver, who was found dead on the- line. The effect was to depress the handle, and'thus allow the control to be. left with full power on, though the niotorman was absent. Doctors gave evidence that tho driver's death was duo to. his head striking a bridge while he was leaning , out.
