PERSONAL MATTERS

Dr. H. W. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is visiting Wellington. Sir Heaton- and Lady Rhodes were passengers by the Wahine from the South this morning. The Mayor, Mr. C. B. Norwood, at present in Australia, will probably return to Wellington by tho Tahiti, arriving about 16th August. The Hons. G. J. Smith, J. A. Hauau, H. L. Michel, and E. Moore, M.L.C., arrived from Lyttelton by the Wahine this morning. Mr. James M'Donald, of Wellington, has been appointed a life member of the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers' Association.

Congratulations were extended to Dr. E. Marsden by the Rotary Club at their luncheon yesterday upon his appointment as head of the Scientific Research Depaitmont.

Members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce laßt evening extended their hearty congratulations and good wishes to their president (Mr. J. B. Simpson) upon his marriage,, and presented him with a silver mounted docanter. Mr. L. 8. Polden, A.I.A. (London), who was reported in last week's cable news as having been successful in completing Part 111. of the examinations of the Institute of Actuaries, is one of tho Assistant Actuaries of tho recently created Government Actuary's Department. Mr. Charles Berkeley, who lias been a popular advance agent for the firm of J. 0. Williamson, Ltd., for a great many years, arrived at Auckland by the Marama from Sydney, telegraphs "The Post's*' Auckland correspondent. Mr. Berkeley has retired on the advice of his medical advisers, after 41 years' servieo, and intends to resido in Auckland. Mr. Francis Charles Leggett, for many years an officer in the Colonial 'Forces, has died at Gisborne, at the age of 93, states a Press Association message. He landed in Dunedin in 1860, being then recruiting officer for His Majesty's Forces. Ho was later transferred to the Waikato, where he saw active service and was an officer in the first Waikato Militia, and had a distinguished record. Ho subsequently entered the Civil. ServicS, and resided at Auckland on retiring thirty years ago.
