FERRY TRAIN DELAY
"CIRCUMSTANCES ALTER CASES." ; ; --- (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. "J" The delay in the train from the ferry one Sunday recently was commented on by Mr. H. Holland, M.P., at the joint meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Transport Committee, and. the District Railway Committee,of the Progress League yesterday. : Mr. Holland" said there had ■ been comment in Wellington over the mat' ter,' and it was thought unnecessary that passengers should be kept .waiting half an half-hour longer than was, usual. They had to wait in the' cold carriages on the cold wharf while the; mails were put on the train. Mr.'. H. Chapman, District Traffic Manager of Railways, explained thaton this occasion there ■ was a stopwork .meeting of waterside workers, and extra men had to be found to unload the luggage and mails. It! was thought that it was not necessary,.to run another train to take the luggage; tip to Christchureh, as^this would havel cost-the Department another £10. Pas; sengers would have to wait either" lit' Christchureh or Lyttelton f0r.... their luggage, and as it was a Sunday and' there was no business to be done,"it was considered that it would be just? as well for them to wait at Lyttelton. ■■■■'• Mr. C. Williams, secretary of theHarbour Board, said that if the ferry master made a mess of the berthing of his ship and kept them waiting on the" cold ship for half an hour there'was no fuss, but if they had to wait for the same time in the warm carriages they "kicked up the devil's own tow."
