——♦ (From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ ■ NELSON, 2nd August. The City Council decided last week to accede to a request from the Nelson College.^Old Boys' Association to exempt the rates on the college ground in Vanguard street. Permission was given to the Rock Garden Society to extend the rock garden northwards to the end of the bank. Consideration of extending the pavilion at Trafalgar Park was deferred. The City Engineer reported that the men employed on the. Poppy Day fund- are at King's Acre stripping the soil preparatory to filling in. The electrical engineer notified that 1503 city applications had been received; an increase of seven. City extensions totalled 276, an increase of nine, and Tahuna applications 142, an increase of eight. The death occurred 'at Motueka last week, after a long illness, of Mr. Henry Saunders, aged 63. He was formerly licensee of the Commercial Hotel, Nelson, and had been for many years connected with the picture business, running a country circuit with headquarters at Motueka. The Nelson city A rainfall for July was 1.09 inches, compared with an average for July in past years of 3.49 inches.
