SUBSIDY TO BE ASKED FOR.
(By Tel«gr»ph.—Pr«« Association.)
DUNEDIN, 2nd August.
A meeting, attended by representatives of various commercial organisations and many mercantile houses, was held this afternoon for the purpose of discussing the important question of shipping services between Australia and South Island ports. A resolution was passed directing the attention of the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet to the lack of shipping facilities in- the South Island, more particularly to and from Melbourne, and asking that the question of assistance by means of a subsidy in aid of the re-establishment of a regular and adequate steamer service between Melbourne and South Island ports should be seriously considered. A copy of this resolution is to be sent to all members of Parliament and the Canterbury and Southland organisations are to be asked to enlist the support of the members for those provinces. Canterbury and Southland are also to be asked to join Otago in a strong deputation to wait on the Prime Minister i.n Wellington. A copy of all the resolutions is to be forwarded to Sir Joseph Ward, with a letter expressing appreciation of the stand which he has taken in the matter.
