FATHER OF THE HANSOM
* — Tho hansom cab is still to be seen on the streets of London as the evenings draw in, but this vehicle survives only on its antiquarian interest (writes "Colophon" in "John o' London's AVeekly"). Nevertheless, tho resignation of Mr. J. S. Hansom from the post of honorary secretary of the Catholic Record Society reminds us that the palmy days of the hansom are not so far behind us after all. The inventor of the vehicle was Mr. J. S. Hansom's father, who was the architect of the Birmingham Town Hall and other important buildings throughout the country. It was in 1834 that tho elder Hansom took out his patent for his cab, though the modern design was produced by Lord Shrewsbury in the 'nineties of last century. Mr. J. S. Hansom followed his father's profession of architect, and designed many ecclesiastical builciings in different parts of tho country, notably the Church of tho Holy Name in Manchester.
