THE PORT KEMBLA

"IN A BAD WAY."

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, 19th July.

According to a cable message received in Dunedin to-day, tho Commonwealth and Dominion Line's steamer Port Kembla is in a bad way on San Salrador Island, near Cuba. A cablegram received by the manager of the D.S.A. from London reads as follows: — "Lloyd's bulletin regarding Port Kembla gloomy, consider cargo practically lost.'' The Port Kembla's u rgo included a large consignment of the new season *3 drapery goods for the D.S.A.

It was reported towards the end of last week that the Port Kembla was badly damaged. It is known that private cablegrams stated that the vessel was making water in Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5 holds. At that time coal was being jottisoned in order to lighten the steamer, so that she could be towed off. Information received by the local agents, Messrs. Swift and Co., from the Wellington office of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line clearly indicates that the Port Kembla has not been refloated. The message stated that the London principals of the company hope to be in a position to cable the fullest possible advice early this week regarding the salvage operations.
