STRUCK BY MOTORCAR
THE ADELAIDE ROAD FATALITY.
An inquest was hejd to-day by the Coroner (Mr. E. Page, S.M.) on Edward John Knapman (63), who died in Wellington Hospital on 4th July after being knocked down by a motor-car in Adelaide road. Dr. E. B. W. Smythe said that the deceased was admitted to tho Hospital at 6 p.m. on 29th June, suffering from fractured ribs, a fractured collarbone, and a fractured leg. There appeared to be congestion of both lungs, which rapidly becamo more serious. Witness believed that the cause of death was the congestion of tho lungs, which was due as much to the injuries received as to the fact that tho deceased was confined to bed. Rure Simeon Flogeltaub gave evidence that he was driving a motor-car clown Adelaide road at 5.45 p.m. on 29th Juno at fifteen miles per hour, when the deceased suddenly stepped off tho footpath *in front of tho car. Witness attempted to swerve to the right, but could not avoid knocking the deceased down. The car's bright headlights were on at the time, as it was a davit night. . Harry Sorsen, a cook at the Wellington Hospital, said that he saw Knapman step off tho footpath just as the car was passing him. The left mudguard struck him. Witness would say that the car was going fairly slowly. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
