LESSENING IMPORTS
ADVERSE^ BALANCE TO MAY 64. MILLIONS.
For the five months ended May the : imports into New Zealand were valued at ,£20,999,905, which is £220,392 loss than the total for the same five month;; o£ last year, £21,220,297. The May, 192 C, figures, as compared with May. 1925, showed a sharper descent, from £3,930,480 last year to £3,457,037 thi • year, a fall of £473,443. Comparing the five monthly import: tion of motor vehicles, it is scon tha. the number this year (January-May in elusive) is greater (11,632—10,262), but the Customs value is less, having fallen from £1,968,501 last year to £1,863,233 this year. Those figures show a decrease in the value of imported motor vehicles of £105,268 for the five months, and if one examines the figures for May separately he will find located in that month most of the falliug-off. In May of 1925 2340 motor vehicles were worth £408,022; in May, 1926, 1990 were worth £308,722, a decrease of £99,300 in value and of 350 in number. REDUCED EXPORTS. Turning to exports, the year ended 31st May is in some respects more useful than the year ended 31st March, as it includes later shipments of the season 's produce, though at 31st May there was still more than the usual amount of dairy produce in store in>he Dominion. During the twelve months ended 31st May the Dominion exported goods worth £45,764,578, and imported goods worth £52,236,015, an excess of imports of £6,471,417. Compared with last year, the five months export figures (January-May inclusive) fell from £34,997,637 to £25,----499,943, and the May figures from £5,174,043 to £4,081,908. If tho figures be confined to New Zealand produce, they read: Five months decline from £34,683,127 to £25,110,613; May from £5,118,532 to £3,989,949. WOOL DOWN OVER 5. MILLIONS.
