VOSSELER SHIELD

WON" BY HUTT VALLEY HARRIERS.

On Saturday, the first inter-club race of the season for the Voeseles Shield, over a distance of ten miles, took place at Miramar. Fifty runners started. Full teams were entered by Hutt Valley, Olympic, and Wellington harr.'-r clubs. Individual runners represented Brooklyn and Scottish clubs. Hutt Valley, with a team of 25, were able to retain the shield, which they have now won for five consecutive years. The course of two laps extended round Miramar. It started from the terminus, and went north to the Chinamen's gardens, then through a cowvard to the foot of the hill on the west "side of Miramar. The road was then followed to the Lyall Bay sandhills, from where the championship course was followed to Ira street, and then back to the terminus, via Prara street and Matai road. The same course was then travelled ever again. A start was made at 3.15 p.m., and J. Robinson (Wellington harriers) took the lead, but he made the pace too fast, and by the time the cow-yard was reached lie was overtaken by R. Kent (Hutt Valley), with B. Bibby close behind. From here the going became very heavy. The rest of the field was well spread out. At the end of the first lap, Kent and Bibby were running together (time 3_min 55sec), with G. Dome 150 yds behind. Next came Wilson, Godfrey, Cook, Mitchell, Eyres, and Robinson. In the second lap, Kent and Bibby continued to run together, and Bibby ran home a winner by about one yard (time lh 7min) from Kent, with Cook third. On the points being worked out it was found that Hutt Valley had won the shield with 108 points. The team was: Kent, G. Dome, Mitchell, A. Dome, Oliver, Smith, Barker, Gilchrist, Payne, and Hutton. Wellington were second, and Olympic third. Officials of the day were: Mr W. H. Pollock (starter), Messrs. G. F. Pulsford and W. H. Pollock (timekeepers), Messrs. C. H. Goddard, J. H. D. Smith, and H. Orrarod (recording stewards), Messrs. A. Robinson and P. Harlen (trail-layers).
