DANCING
A most successful dance was that of the Wellington College Old Girls, held, in Sydney Street Hall on Saturday evening. The building was artistically decorated with lycopodium and the school colours (black and gold), while a number of mascots in the form of black cats arranged round the walls seemed to assure the dancers that they were to participate in a very enjoyable evening. Cosy fires in tho hall were appreciated by both young and old. A dainty supper was served. A feature of the evening was the music supplied by a splendid orchestra. Much credit is due to the secretary, Miss H. Franklin, whose untiring efforts to make the dance a success were fully appreciated. The chaperons were:—Mrs. Norwood (black panne velvet). Miss Mac Lean (blue frock and shawl to match), Mrs. Dawson (black and gold), Miss Batham (flame embossed velvet), Mrs. Kirkcaldie (black and scarlet). The committee was: Miss Franklin (mauve . and silver), Miss/ Anyon (black velvet), Miss Pownall (cyclamen georgette), Miss Ballinger (black velvet), Miss Mitchell (green), ' Miss Ma•son (cream georgette), Miss Parker (floral ninon), Miss Perry (blue and silver). There were also present: Misses Shannon, Paterson (2), Clegg, Radford, Kendall, Messrs. Duncan, Mason, Atkins, Pearce, Chambers, Mayes, Radford, Dawson, Burgess, Elliott, and Drs. Forsyth and Nile. The weekly social and dance of the Irish Republican Association will be held tomorrow night. Free complimentary tickets are to be issued for the following Tuesday. The dance is held in the social clubrooms, 80, Manners street. The joy night conducted at the Town Hall on Saturday under the auspices of the Maytime Jazz Club was one of the happiest functions of the.kind held in the hall. Some 300 couples found the arrangements to their liking, the floor being in splendid order and the music excellent. A request for a repetition is being acceded fo by the committee, and in conjunction with the next function a jazzing contest will be held.
