NEW SOUTH WALES ASTIR
COST OF COMPENSATION TO
WORKERS
EFFECT ON EMPLOYMENT.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received Ist July, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Additional insurance companies have notified that they will be unable to operate under the Workmen's Compensation Act. In somo country towns indignation meetings arc being held and +he demand made that the Act should be amended. Additional sawmills are closing down in the southern as well as in the northern districts. The Town Clerk of Sydney told the Fi '.ance Committee of the City Council that the cost of insurance under the Workers' Compensation Act last year was £13,139. Under the new Act it will cost this year from £48,000 to £50,000. The operation of the Act will increase heavily the running cost of shipping services, and it is regarded as certain that freight rates and passenger fares will be raised. The closing ot sawmills will probably result in numbers of ships being rendered idle. The Water Board has decided to carry its own risks. All future applicants for employment will have to provide medical certificates sh-wing that they are in a state of good health.
