CHRIST AND LIFE TO-DAY
(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 29th June. "It has been my growing conviction for many years that the overwhelming majority of the clergy of all denominations and a proportionately largo numbor of church members havo failed to grasp, the meaning of Christ's teaching," declared'the Mayor (the Boy. J. K. Areher)j in commenting on Mr. Lloyd George's address, of which a cabled report was published in Monday's "Post." "It has to be remembered," continued Mr. Archer, "that Mr. Lloyd George as a speaker uses picturesque language. At the same time there is always an element of com-mon-sense and truth in his apparently exaggerated statements. This is correct in what he says of Christ's place in life to-day. "Society as it is-now constituted is not only out of harmony with teachings of Christ, but is so to such an extent that if Christ's doctrines were preached to-day as He taught them, they would be considered revolutionary. "Either through ignorance or fear, tho modern clergyman steers clear of the economic, implications of the Gospel. Perhaps Mr. Lloyd George is not speaking too strongly when ho suggests that many churches to-day vould not give Christ a place in their pulpits or on their roll of membership."
