COUNCIL OF EDUCATION
MINISTER MEETS MEMBERS
PBIMABY SCHOOLS FOB GIBLS.
The Council of Education met this inorning under tho presidency of Mr. J. Caughloy, Director of Education, the following members being present:— Miss B. E. Carnachan, Miss E. A. Chaplin, Miss N. E. Coad, Dr. H. M. Northcroft, and Messrs. E. Marsden, F. H. Bakewell, E. C. Banks, H. G. Cousins, D. T. Fleming, J. H. Howell, J. B. Kirk, F. Milner, H. F. Penlington, and T. U. Wells. . The. recently-appointed "Minister of Education, the Hon. B. A. Wright, was present, and expressed his appreciation of the opportunity of meeting the council, to which he looked for much valuable advice and assistance, and he expressed the hope that he might be able io be present at their subsequent meetings. Beplying to, the Minister, Mr. Kirk suggested that a reconsideration of tho constitution of the council might assist both the Minister and the council in serving tho cause of education. Mr. Caughley, the Director of Edu-cation,-who returned yesterday from a visit to Australia, briefly mentioned the profit- he haa.' derived from his six weeks' visit and from attending the conference of Educational Directors. It was resolved to request the Department to revise the conditions under which boarding allowances are granted to scholarship-holders. ' •, That the Minister be advised to establish, in every centre where the population exceed.: 12,000, at least one primary school for girls, taking girls from standard I to standard VI., such school to be staffed entirely by women, was the test of a motion proposed by Mr. Kirk. In speaking to the motion, he stressed the scope that such schools •would give to,talented women teachers, and he suggested that were such schools established, less would be heard of the.j demands of women teachers to be appointed as heads of mixed schools.
