SECONDARY INDUSTRIES
DOMINION ORGANISATION URGED.
The necessity for forming a Dominion federation of industrial associations was stressed by Mr. F. Campbell at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Campbell said that there should be a big organisation of the manufacturers of New Zealand. The local- associations had worked well, but he did not think they had pushed on as far as they should, and a big scheme should be formulatod to provide for a federation that would represent the views of the manufacturers of the Dominion. A good aum of money should bo spent to put the federation on a sound financial footing. He suggested that tho four local associations should guarantee something like £400 a year for three years towards paying the salary of an organiser and office expenses. The scale of fees would probably extend from £2 2s for small bodies to £10 10s to tho bigger ones. "We must get busy, otherwise we will be going back," declared Mr. Campbell. "I saw recently that there is an organisation here to push British goods, with a membership of 2000. If British manufacturers can do it, surely New Zealand manufacturers can." Mr. Campbell pointed out that tho manufacturers in inland 'towns were not represented. There were about 4500 factories in New Zealand. He intended to bring down a proposal and place it before the association, when the committee would havo opportunity to discuss it. "If you let another year go by you will be well left," ho declared. "We want New Zealand goods first; then the Empire; tho rest, nowhere. If we can educato the public to buy New Zealand-made goods, the factories will grow, and we will be abla to place on the market such articles that wo need never talk about tariff. We will beat the overseas stuff in fair competition, and we will bring down the cost of living by increasing production." Members generally favoured the idea, and it was decided to refer it to the meeting, of the Industrial Corporation which is1 to bo held shortly.
