THE NAVY LEAGUE
PUBLIC APATHY DEPLORED,
Tho monthly meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League was held last evening. Mr. A. I<\ Wiren was in the chair, and the members present were:—Messrs. Walker, Bird, Hunt, Finch, A. Hollis, Danoch (secretary), Mrs. Darling, and Miss Edwin. It was decided to send a letter to Commander • Middleton thanking him for tire interesting lectures ho had delivered at five of the schools in Wellington, and assuring him that his work would have a lasting effect. ' Mrs. Darling asked the secretary what was the cause of tho lack of interest shown by tho public in Navy League matters, and of tho "present slump in tho Navy League?" Members continued to send along their subscriptions, but they neglected the league in many ways. Few of them ever attended tho meetings. In reply, Mr. Darroch said that he could not account for the half-hearted-ness of the public towards the league. Boxing and football matches attracted largo crowds, but it was noticed that there was an exceedingly poor attendance at the public meeting at the Town Hall to hear Commander Middloton's address. It was suggested by another member that probably the feeling that existed after the war was largely responsible. The chairman said he thought it was a passing phase. ' Messrs. Bird and Darroch were elected to choose. subjects for essays, for which the Palmer prizes are offered. Gratification was expressed that during tho last three weeks twenty-two new members had been enrolled. Mr. L. J. Knight, Danncvirke, had been made a life member.
