NELSON NEWS

(From Our Own Correjpondant.) NELSON, 31sfc May. Tho Tahunanui Town Boai-d at its last meeting received a letter from the Nelson City Council advising that the council considered it useless/to proceed with the amalgamation conference on the stipulations laid down by the board, as it would be impossible to provide Tahunanui residents with the present city facilities on payment .of the city rates. The board resolved to ask what terms the council was prepared to offer as a basis of amalgamation. A: house occupied by Mr. Cecil Goodwin and family in Wainui street was considerably damaged by (ire at about 1.40 on Friday morning. The Fire Brigade was soon on the scene and managed to subdue the flames. A quantity of furniture was removed to safety, but the rest was destroyed. The contents of the .house wore insured for £150 in the State Office. Mr. G. T. Fitzgerald, pastor of the Church of Christ, has accepted a call from the'Dawson Street Church of Christ, Ballarat. He expects to finish his term of office in' Nelson in July. Hockey enthusiasts and the public generally are looking forward to the game to be played with the visiting Indian Army team. The Nelson team is said to be training hard, as it is recognised that the utmost will have to b^- made to retain Nelson's reputation of never having suffered defeat on its own ground. The long spell of wet weather has been succeeded by keen frosty mornings and bright sunny days. Mr. Greenwood, Agricultural Instructor for the Marlborough and Nelson districts, attended the annual conference of the Nelson Provincial . Farmers' Union on Thursday,, last and gave some interesting information concerning the winter school to be hold at Richmond next month. The Motueka branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held its annual reunion dinner on Saturday evening. The 'chair was occupied by the president, Dr. Green. The attendance was about 60. The function was highly successful. The Rev. John Vosper, vicar of Motueka, is at present in the North Island. While there he will visit his daughter, Mrs. Little', of Paeroa.. Bowlers in Wellington will be (surprised to know that the Wakefield green, Nelson, is still open, and on Saturday last two Nelson Club rinks paid the green a visit and played two full twenty-one head games in ideal weather. It is probable that other games will be played before the greens are closed. Mr. C. Innes, of Victoria Club, is still in Nelson, and twice during the last fortnight he has played \ for Nelson Club at Wakefield.
