TROUT
STOCKING THE STREAMS.
The fish trapping season for 1925 opened as usual in the Wairarapa waters on Ist May, but the cycle of bad seasons continued, and a' depressing sequence of .flooded rivers, and lost traps, ended in a total of 300,000 brown ova, says the annual report of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Throughout'the big runsof fish the routine seldom varied, a few days' trapping, then a heavy fresh, a wait of several days, the replacing of trapa, and again a flood. At the end of July the attempt was abandoned, and in addition to 400,000 ova ordered from , the Otago Acclimatisation Society, a further 400,000 were obtained from the Southland. Society, whilst 150,000 rainbow ova were procured from the Government district at JRotorua, making a total of 1,250,000. From these ' 1,063,500 brown fry and 135,000 rainbow were reared and distributed. Brown yearlings were liberated to the number of 5600, and rainbow yearlings 3800. Tho council, taking into consideration the comparative failure of the previous three seasons, and with a view to giving tho Waipoua and Mangatarere a rest and fresh stock,, has ordered, 1,250,000 Jbrown ova (from Lake te Anau) from the. Southland Society, and has also ordered 100,000 rainbow ova from the Otago Society (Lake Hawca), making a total for 1926 of 1,350,----000. No trapping will be attempted this season in the Wairarapa, but all efforts will be concentrated on the heavy task of hatching, rearing, and distributing throughout the society's district the'resultant fry from this large total, in addition to approximately 9000 yearlings.
