FIRST CITY RETURN

CENT. INCREASE.

The first city population return to be completed, following the recent census, was announced ihis morning. Christchurch city is shown to have a population of 83,105, as compared with 71,499 at the last census in 1921, an increase of over 16 per cent. The 1921 figures include Woolston, which is now shown separately for census purposes, and since 1921 the city boundaries have been materially altered in other respects. The return issued this morning is as follows:— I ;

Slightly more than two-thirds of the population figures for the whole of the Dominion have now been published, but the larger centres, with the exception of Christchurch City, are still incomplete, and rough count-ups of returns issued to date shows a population of about 686,000 as compared with about 615,000 for the samo districts in 1921.

The latest return of European population issued by the Government Statistician shows large increuses since 1921 in the number of people resident in the Invereargill, St. Kilda, and Otaliuku districts. The following bulletin was issued yesterday afternoon:—
