IN THE COALFIELDS

AN UNPOPULAR STRIKE,

(Received 21st May, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The indications are that the enginedrivers' strike on the coalfields will be brought to a conclusion at an early date. Officials of the Miners' Federation, realising that the rank and file of the union are strongly opposed to continued, idleness, are pressing, for an early settlement. The miners f. representatives and the engine-drivers have given permission for members lOf the Miners/ Federation to fill slack or small coal at grass at Whitburn Colliery j,u the Maitland district. The object of this move is said to be to provide supplies for the Broken Hill Steel Works at Newcastle. Otherwise the works would be compelled to close down, throwing idle between 4000 and 5000 men.
