SAILING TO-NIGHT
NO GRjgAT DAMAGE CAUSED,
(Received 21st May,, noon.) SYDNEY, This Day. •It is announced that the Makura sails at 8 o'clock to-night. It is an unhappy coincidence that the vessel's new master, Captain Mawson, assumed command only yesterday, relieving Captain Worral, who is retiring. The ship?s fireman first noticed the fire. When the brigades arrived, a section of the stokehold was a raging furnace. The heat was almost unbearable, and the smoke made respiration almost impossible. The firemen worked hard and kept the .flames from tho fuel reservoirs. An inspection afterwards showed how serious had been the position, for the flames had swept this vital portion of the ship. While the flames were being extinguished, another outbreak was reported from C deck, but with powerful pumps offering an unlimited quantity of salt water, the flames were soon out. . , A hurried survey later showed that the intrinsic damage would probably not exceed a few hundred pounds. No structural damage was occasioned the ship. Repair work was immediately undertaken.
