WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS?
MAIN AND LOCAL HIGHWAYS , BOARDS.
Members of the City and Suburban Highways Board had before them yesterday a letter from the chairman of th Main Highways Board relative to the contributions which wero expected from the Main Highways Board by the local board in respect of roads paved, or to be paved, under the City and Suburban Highways Act' in tho vicinity of Wellington. After some discussion it was decided to refer the question to a sub-committee for further investigation as to the provisions of the original legislation. The position arises from the application of the provisions of both the Main Highways and the' City and Suburban Highways Acts to the roads in question, for, as the legislation now stands, there is difficulty in the Main Highways Board making contributions for roads under the jurisdiction of the local board. Some time ago the Mayor and other representatives of the local board waited upon Sir Francis Bell, who agreed that the understanding was that the money .would be made available, and suggested that if necessary a special grant could be made by the Government. More recently it has .been considered that the difficulty .should be overcome by amending legislation, and it was upon this point that the discussion centred, as to whether the Government's liability ceased with the first payment in respect of construction or as to whether there should be further payments for maintenance.
