RAILWAY CHARGES
FOR RACEHORSES AND SHOW EXHIBITS.
Alterations to the scale of charges on the railways for the carriage of racehorses, goods being sent by rail for display at shows, etc., are published in the '' Gazette this week. Under the present system a certain reduction is made in the charges upon racehorses and show goods which, as a matter of convenience to the owners, are sent to a number of: places in circuit before being returned to the place of dispatch. A reduction is made on the return charge, but frequently difficulty is experienced in determining the rebate where the circuit involves a number of different stations at which temporary stoppages aro made for races and show purposes. Under the new system owners of racehorses will pay full rates on all journeys, and on return to the home station a refund of 25 per cent, will be made on the total charge. In the case of show exhibits a 50 per cent, reduction will be made. Thsse proposals have been submitted to the New Zealand Racing Conference, the New Zealand Trotting Association, and the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, and have been approved as being a business-like solution of the difficulty which has presented itself hitherto. Amendments have also been made to the rates on butter and cheese. The effect of the alteration is that for long distances of 175 miles and more, where the produce is transported by truck loads, a reduced rate, on a sliding scale, is to be charged.
