FLOWERS FOR SOLDIERS' GRAVES

(To the Editor.)

' Shy—The: girja'.' Jwaricji & the ': W.N.R. would Jik'e ,to express. through your columns their keen appreciation of tho.magnificent response to their appeal for flowers for the soldiers' graves at' Karori on Anzac 'Day. , ■ ■ We feel this wonderful response was in no small sense clue to the appeal you so kindly published and through the overtures of Mi1. .G. L. Mtewart, secretary of the Education Board. The gratifying results enabled. us to successfully carry, out our original plan, to decorate every soldier's grave both iv the soldiers' plot and in the outlying nnd scattered portions of tha'■ cemetery. The somewhat big undertaking was made possible by the generous services of the Automobile Association, who conveyed one hundred helpers to the cemetery,' the. transport arrangements being carried out by Mr. D. J. M'Gowan. Contributions of flowers were received from all over the district, and the companies of Girl Guides and Girl Guards eagerly volunteered for the ..work of distribution. My committee feel that very special thanks are due to Mr, Harlen, sexton at Karori, and to Mrs. Neilson, both of whom have spent many hours locating unmarked war graves, ■ and now, with a complete record of all soldiers' graves, including tho-3eof South African veterans; my committee hope to undertake the permanent care of graves of all soldiers without relatives or friends. We again- thank ons and all for their spontaneous co-operation in our work and desire to compliment teachers of Wellington on the fine spirit of patriotism loyally instilled into the children as evidenced by their response on' Anzac. Day.—l. am, etc., K. RUSCOE, . Hon secretary. " 30th April :

The income in 1923 of 2120' charitable societies in -Great Britain and Ireland amounted to £26,273,000, an increase of a.million and a qnartcr over the previous year, when only .1995 institutions reported. The expenditure amounted to £23,----583,000, leaving) a balance of; £2,600,000. In view of bad trade and high taxation, this is a remarkable result. : .
