YOUTH WINS

VOLAIRE LOSES TO STACE

In defeating on points at Greyniouth last Saturday' the hardy Frenchman, Eugene Volaire, George Stace has won his way into the good books of the Coast fans, and consequently many nice things have been said about him in that part of the land. The veteran Volaire was also extended a hearty welcome, and Greymduth had no fear in putting him on, for Volaire is not only a valiant fighter, but has also such valuable experience that the drawbacks of a

lengthy ring career are almost unnoticed in a contest in which ho takes part. As long as the tough little Frenchman ca:i stand up in the ring, he will always give a good account of himself, and the fact that he can hit so- hard will always mean possibilities. Both men scaled 10.4. Stace 's longer reach and greater height put his opponent at a disadvantage. Volaire's tactics were to ontico Staco in close and reach him with his right swing. Both missed badlK- at times. Staee did good werk w« his straight left, and Volaire landed some very effective hooks. Stace also showed that he is better at infighting than was thought, as he got his right up to the jaw several times. The contest appears to have been interesting, but not spectacular. Both men fought well and were well matched.. The referee's action- in giving the , decision, to. the Australian evoked loud cheering, and the loser was also warmly applauded. Before introducing the professionals, the referee read telegrams from Dick Elmbur and Dick Loyeridge, challenging the winner. A telegram was also read from Tommy Armstrong challenging any 9-ston3 boxer in the Dominion. News of M'Kni'ght. Nelson M'Knight is in with a challenge to Dick Loveridge for the welter weight title, although it is no certainty that the Taranaki boxer will hold it by the time Purdy has had his say (says the "Waikato Times"). M'Knight is willing to provide a side wager to, say that-he is-the goods and whether or not Loveridge has the title a return match between Loveridge and tha Hamilton man' should provide a good encounter. Loveridge has proved that he is a quality, performer but the M'Knight party are confident of the ability of their principal. However, attention is not directed to any particular direction but any suitable match would be acceptable. M'Knight is keeping himself fit. He has a school going regularly'at. Frankton, where he has a number of promising lads under his care. It is his intention if induce-; ment offers to extend boxing and physical culture operations to other parts of the district. Notes.
