VALICARE

POINTS OX HER BREEDING.

When a thoroughbred displays such amazing speed p.s Valicare it is interesting to examine her blood lines to see whether the names of any distinguished relatives can be found. So far. as Valais is concerned, one need not bother about his relatives. WJe all know now that the chestnut transmits wondrous pace to all his stock.

Courante, the dam of Valicare, was by Malster from Cross Step, and the Moses Bros, cave 125 guineas for her at a William Thompson, sale. Trainer J. W. Cook

leased the dark brown filly, who 10 years ago used to make, the touts gasp with the pace she showed*in the mornings. But she could not win a race. Twice she went out at 7 to 4 in a maiden race, once at Moorefield and the other time at Canterbury" Park, and the'best she could do was a second and a third. After half a dozen failures as a three-year-old she was sent. back to the Arrowfield Stud. Courante's dam, Cross Step, threw one winner, of two small races, Dally, to Malster, but: CroBS Step's sister' Cross Battery was a: greater succes at the stud, as she gave tne racecourse Artilelryman, who won a, Melbourne Cup, and the Oaks winner. Folly Queen, dam of Shrapnel. The sisters Cross Step and Cross Battery were got by Stepniak, from Fire Cross, half-sister to the ; Derby winner Alawa, and good' stayers in Long Tom' and Straightfire. Fire Cross; was from Crossfire, a Doncaster winner . : It is interesting to note that'Ala'wd, who won the V.R.C. Derby and ran second in tlie Melbourne^ Cup, was by. Malster, and the Messrs. Moses no doubt had hopes of getting another Alawa when they sent Crossfire's grand-daughter Cross Step to the same sire. Probably Courante' disappointed them on the racecourse, but she has made ample amends at the stud. Her 'first-born, Rendezvous, by Polycrates, while he could go very fast, did not shine beyond six furlongs. Valais, however, has apparently, nicked with the stoutest Wood in, Courante's veins..
