WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP CONWAY BEATS HORTON A KEEN FIGHT. A glorious day, without a breath of wind, saw one of the keenest struggles ever witnessed on Heretaunga, between those two fine golfers, ; Horton, the amateur New. Zealand' champion, and Conway, the.Miramar "track," when Horton,' who . owed , his , defeat to. several missed short putt hits, took Conway to tho nineteenth green.
The first was halved in 4'a. Horton took the second in 4, to Couway's 5, and took a perfect 2 at the short iron hole, Conway being bunkered and taking 4,(Horton2;up). The fourth was halved ih 5, and Conway took the fifth in 3, Horton taking three putts for 4. Horton 1 up). Horton took the sixth in. a perfect. 4. (Horton 2 up). Both were short of the green at the seventh, Conway's was. the better positic •. from a shorter, approach, and Horton' took two putts, Conway- taking the hole, 4-5 (Horton 1 up). At the eighth Conway's third lay. nearer the pin. Horton after two brilliant wooden shots, running through the green - with his ■ third. Horton was short with his approach putt, and missed, the . next, Conway taking the hole 5-6. (All square.) From indifferent drives the ninth was halved in 3, both, sinking ten-foot putts.: The tenth was halved in 4. Horton pulled both drive and iron approach at the eleventh, and was twenty feet from the pin, with his third, but holed the Jong putt for a half in,4. Horton played a magnificent iron second at the twelfth, and just, missed a-9ft putt for a3, taking tfye hole,. 4to Conway's 5, the latter slicing his second and only half hitting the third (Horton 1 up). At the thirteenth Horton played a beautiful iron shot fifteen feet from the pin. Conway was short with his approach, and to the right, and. with his putt stymied Horton, whose third, lay ten inches from the hole. Horton missed the putt and the hole was halved in 5. Horton pulled his, iron shot at the fourteenth, and was short out of the bunker. Conway, whose drive and approach were both short, missed his putt. Horton overran the hole and missed tho return, Conway again-squaring the match with 4-5. Both were c-i the fifteenth green and both lay dead with their putts, but Horton unaccountably missed one of ten inches. (Conway 1 up.) Conway. pulled his drive into the rough at the sixteenth and Horton's ball was perched on the top of the bunker, yet the hole was halved in 4. Both'got exceptionally long drives at the . seventeenth, but both approaches were, short, and the hole washalvediii 4. (Conway dormie 1.) At . the eighteenth Horton pulled his drive, into tho fough, but , played a magnificent won shot ,to within ten feet of the pin. Conway sliced his drive and pulled his second into the bunker away to the left, overrunning the-pin fifteen feet with his third out of.thick rough. Horton 's putt just.stopped short pf a 3, and he took the hole in '4-5 (all square). Both were short-at the nineteenth, Horton off the. green, ariji he overran the hole with his'approach, missing the return. Conway laid his putt. dead and holed out for 4.winning the match, 1 up at the nineteenth. DUNCAN BEATS PARKER. Although playing. good golf, J. B. Parker went down to A. D. S. Duncan's deadly work on the green. Parker commenced well, winning the first hole in 4. The next was halved.in-5. Duncan won the next in 3, and took the short fifth in 2, a beautiful drive and a pretty mashie chip, making him 2 up. Duncan won the sixth, 4-5, but lost the next in 4-6. The eighth was halved. Approaching the ninth, Parker struck the creek,, and picked up, making him 3 down at the ' turn. In the homeward run Parker stuck to his opponent well, halving the , tenth, but losing the eleventh, 5-4, winning the twelfth and thirteenth with 4 and 3. At the fourteenth he looked like bringing Duncan down to; 1 up, but Duncan struck the bunker with his iron shot and overran with his second.' Duncan sank a long curly putt of 20 feet and maintained his position. At the fifteenth Duncan sank another 20 feet putt, and halved the hole in 2 with Parker, whose tee shot lay not far from the pin. The sixteenth was halved in 4, Duncan winning 3 up and 2.
