HUTT GALA

CROWDED ATTENDANCE.

The great attraction for to-day, not only at the Hutt but for city and suburban dwellers, was the Lower Hutt Gala, which was officially opened this morning by Sir Alexander Roberts, who was introduced by the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. W..T. Strand). Each emphasised the speedy growth and the popularity of. the Hutt Valley, both for residential and industrial purposes, and hoped ' that the object of the gala would be fully attained. The purposes of the gala are, first to' provide funds for the development of the recreation area on the western side of the river, and, secondly, the further beautification of Riddiford Park. By 11 "o'clock the attendance had reached" 4000, and later steadily increased. Full provision' was made for the entertainment of the visitors by children's and adult races, side-shows, boxing, maypole and other fancy dancing, and dancing on the green, etc. The special attraction of the gala, however, will-be the evening gatherings, when the spacious ground will be flooded with electric light, with special coloured effects, and the whole of the day's programme will be repeated. City and other i-esi-dents will find this a delightful ending to their Easter holidays. There is a frequent train and bus service to and from the district.
