TENNIS TOURNEY

SPOILED BY GALE OF WIND

CHAMPIONS IN GOOD FOKM.

The wind which threatened on Saturday morning to spoil the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's hard court tournament at the Miramar courts fulfilled its promise in the afternoon, when a ■ halfgale, accompanied by choking clouds of dust, swept down from the northern hill* arid completely disconcerted the players. It was impossible to control the balls, and play lost much of its interest. Umpires' stands were blown over, and a number of score-sheets went sailing away into the air beyond recovery. With this handicap, progress was necessarily slow in some of the classes, but good games were witnessed, particularly between the stars, who have passed the preliminary rounds and are now meeting players of. their own calibre. The match in which Miss D. Howe and L. France met Miss East and Donovan in the handicap combined doubles was one of the hardest fought in the tourney. After the latter pair's defeat by France and Miss Howe in the championship doubles, it was not expected that the tables would be turned, but Miss East lost no opportunity of getting a ball back, and Donovan was a human whirlwind, often chasing a ball into the next court, and invariably getting it back. They snatched victory from France and Miss Howe with tht score, 52-50, although a minute before they were down, 4946. The following are the results of play after "The Post" went to press on Saturday:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. Men's Singles. :' First round.—Blennerhassett beat J. Martin, G-0, 0-1; M. L. Lampo beat B. T.
