HUGE REVENUE FRAUDS
TAX COLLECTOR'S EMBEZZLEMENT. (United Press Association,—Copyright.) (Keutcrs Telegram.) ' BOMB,. 3rd April. An amazing revenue fraud has been disclosed owing to Mantuzzi, the chief collector of taxes in Venice, giving himsolf up to tho police on' a charge of stealing fourteen million lire. Twelve years ago Mantuzzi was earning 40s per week, but he began gambling in the State lotteries, in which he r.aid he won a prizo of a million lire. He purchased .a beautiful villa and lived a life of luxury. Mantuzzi has been embezzling extensively by means of the inheritance tax. According to the law, legatees are not always obliged to pay the entire tax immediately, but ban pay, it in instalments. When Montuzzi received the full amount from legatees he only entered a fraction in his books, .pocketed the difference, and used it to purchase tickets in lotteries. ■
The Government now finds that overmuch latitude has been allowed to high revenue officials, whose accounts after this will be rigorously inspected and subjected to strict-Fascist control.
