AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MASTERTON' RETAIN M'VILLY

SHIELD

HOSE WINS TWO EVENTS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., 4th April. The Maaterton Athletic Club retains possession of the M'Villy Shield, having proved.the champion country club on the Show Grounds yesterday by a substantial margin of.points, scoring 106 against 65 by the Manawatu Ciub, its most formidable competitor, the others being nowhere *n the running. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Manawatu A.A. and C. Club. The chief attraction to 2000 spectators was Randolph A. Rose who competed . in, the mile and three miles and also as a member of the Masterton team in the inter-club relay. A strong cold wind made conditions unpleasant, and Siiutated against the making of anything like record . times, most of these indeed being under the standard. Rose won both his events with ridiculous ease, there being nobody among the other three competitors »n each occasion to extend him seriously Although Godfrey (Manawatu) hung on to the champion's heels in dogged fashion, ■Kose took the outside running, and generally regarded his tasks with unconcern. Once he obtained a lead the champion made no effort to increase the advantage till, coming into the straight. Then 1 lengthening his six, feet.stride by another six. inches and putting his head down against the wind sailed home amid thunderous, cheers. The mile walk was a duel between Dalzell: and Lankey (both of Dannevirke), who paced heel to heel all the way Dalzell, last-year's champion, winning by-a touch.
