BRICKMAKERS' UNION
NEW AWARD SOUGHT.
A new award is sought by the Wellington Brick, Clay, and Pottery Workers' Union, the former award having expired. A 44-hour week is sought—a decrease of two hours. The wages proposed, with the present rates in parentheses, are: —Flangers, moulders, finishing burners, 2s 6d per hour (2s Id); stickers, 2s 5d (2s); pipe setters, 2s 3d (Is lOd); brick setters, 2s 2d (Is 9d); drawers of patent kilns, 2s 2d (Is 9d); all other workers, 2s Id (Is 7d). Under the existing award a bonus of 3%d per hour, in addition to the above rates, has been paid. Youths, 16 to 17 years, £2 per week (£1 10s);, 17 to 18, £2 10s. (£2); 18 to 19, £3 (£2 ss); 19' to 20, £3 10s (£3); thereafter, full adult wages. Additional holidays sought are Anniversary Day and Picnic Day, and, for burners, 12 days' holiday on full pay. Conditions otherwise remain the same, except as to the radius of the award. Twenty-five miles from Wellington is proposed as against 20. The assessors for the union are Messrs. J. M. Campbell, A. Baker, ' and X*. Roberts, and the Conciliation Council will sit on 15th April.
