FIRST-AID WORK
CERTIFICATES TO HARBOUR EMPLOYEES. '
The chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr. M. Cohen) on Wednesday presented' 24 first aid certificates awarded by the St. John Ambulance Association to members of the permanent staff who had qualified by examination. About 30 men had attended the lectures given -by the medical instructor and lecturer, and they have been given constant additional instruction by.Mi. Frank O'Conirell. Mr. Cohen said he felt it a privilege to present the certificates so - gained on the ground, that, while there was an understanding that the members of the permanent staff should qualify in first aid, it must be realised that in order to do so it meant a considerable amount of selfsacrifice. He was glad to say that, the board took into consideration their proficiency in first aid, as an element in general efficiency which would probably be considered in regard to promotion. After presenting the certificates, Mr. Cohen referred to the presence of Mr. F. O'Connell, who, he said, had been most earnest and assiduous in assisting, in this work. He practically made a hobby of it, and attended the lectures given by the doctor in order to help _ the men to better1 understand the principles of first aid. He desired to express the special thanks of the Harbour Board to Mr. O'Connell for his unselfish and- valuable work. (Applause.) The names of the certificate winners are: —W. Dysart, W. M'Farlane, G. Ross, C. Alexander, A. Aisher, L. Burgess, F. Ball, H. Canwell, C. Chapman, G. Chamberlain, W. Francis, S. Johns, S. Knight, L. Leonard, W. Mackenzie, A. North, E. Ormond, W. Parks, R. Raton, T.
