MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. E. Page, 8.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. • ■
George Ward, a labourer, aged' 28, pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining £8 from Alexander Rose Munro at Utiku by falsely representing that he had a-banking account at Wanganui. Chief-Detective Ward said that the accused was at present serving a sentence of two months' imprisonment for, theft committed at. Taihape. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed to,be served at the expiration of the current sentence. ,
"He is a man who lives practically by his wits, and he has evaded service of the summons for some time," said Chief-Detective Ward, when James Alfred Martin,1 alias Thomas Burton, alias Edward Martin, pleaded guilty: to being found unlawfully on the Danne virke racecourse, being a prohibited person under the Gaming Act. "He ran away to Auckland when he heard of the summons," remarked the' Chief •Detective. The Magistrate fined Martin £5, in default 21 days' imprisonment. An application for time in which to pay the fine was not recommended by the Chief Detective, and was accordingly refused. * . .'.. Walter David Fisher was charged with indecency. After the hearing of evidence the accused, who 'was'repre: sented by Mr. A. B. Sievwright, pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
