Heavy scoring was a feature of the continuation of senior matches on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal for cricket, a light southerly breeze tempering the heat of the sun, and in most cases wickets were firm and true. Batsmen generally were not slow to take advantage of the conditions, and the result was that spectators were treated to some attractive displays o£ forceful batting. Honours for the day. went to Midland, who put on the record club score of 590 runs for the' loss of nine wickets. To this huge total the main contributor was the Midland captain, W. A. Baker, who placed another double century to his credit. When he once was set, Baker went for the bowling in a refreshing manner, driving ;iud cutting the leather in his very best style. His total included four hits for six, and twenty-eight shots to the boundary. Baker was accorded a well-earned ovation when he concluded his great innings. Others who assisted in the compilation of the record score were Patrick(Bl), Turvey (78), Doneshue (51 not out), and Bruce (50). " Hutt maintained their lead in the championship, competition by gaining a five-point win over .Wellington. ' The concluding stages of this match provided, spectators at the Basin Reserve with something worth watching, as the Hutt batsmenhad to fight against time in order to get the required runs. Thanks to a dashing display by Beard, who rattled on 49 in very quick ■ time, they succeeded in their task. Petqne did some solid scoringl against University at the Petone Oval, and A. Finlayson and M. F. ■Nicholls both joined the ranks of this season's century makers. Kilbirnie gained their second win of the Beason at the expense of Old Boys, and Thorndon secured their first victory in the competition by defeating Institute on the first innings. The position of the teams on the championship ladder is now as follows: Hutt, 22: Midland, 14; Wellington, 13, V.M.C.A., 10; Institute, 10; Old Boys, 10; Petone, 7; Kilbirnie, 6; University, 4; Thorndon, 3. Details of the various matches are as follow. —
