PHOTOGRAPHS OF BORSTAL
INMATES.
Exception is taken by the ex-Min-ister of Justice (Sir James Parr) to the recent publication in a certain illustrated paper of photographs of inmates of the Women's Borstal Institute at Point Halswell.
Sir James stated this morning that he had noticed some Press criticism of the photographs, and that he had also received a great number of letters from members of the public. "I should like to say," he said, "that this photographing of the inmates was dono during the holidays, without my knowledge or consent. Further, before I vacated the office of Minister of Prisonß last week, I gave such instructions to the officials as will absolutely prevent the recurrence of such a thing. 1 quite agree with my correspondent that inmates of reformatory institutions should be free as far as possible from the public gaze.
