PLAY AT MIRAMAR

RAIN UPSETS TENNIS TOURNA. MENT YESTEBDAY'S EESULTS. Unfortunately the good weather of Thursday did not hold over yesterday for the Wellington provincial '"tennis tournament, and as a consequence the programme has been considerably interrupted. The weather became overcast yesterday morning, and after an hour or so of play light rain began to fall, which, however, was not serious enough to cause a postponement cf play. It became heavier as the day advanced, and shortly after 1 o'clock caused the players to seek Bhelter. For over an hour it continued to rain, and when the showers' ceased, about 2.30, the courts were under water. Players and the executive were keen to get going again, and a band of willing helpers got busy with brooms and lengths of scrim and started to mop the courts. They made good progress, and with the aid of a drying wind, the surface became good enough to play on by about half past three o'clock. The matches were continued, but another halt was called less than an hour later v when more steady rain began to fall. In spite of this rain one of the matches in the men's championship doublos was played to a conclusion, after which all play was called off, the courts again resembling miniature lake*.

As can be imagined, players and spectators had anything but a comfortable time, and most of them had to make the best of the shelter afford- ' ed by the. trees bordering the courts. One of the best games in the afternoon was the , O 'Brien-France match in the second round of the men's handicap singles. B. B. O'Brien (15) beat L. Trance (owe 15), 60-50. The handicap was too y much for France. O 'Brien played a steady driving game and deserved his win. Several matches in the men's championship doubles were played. Smyth and Lampe proved too strong for Young and Wheeler. ,The game was played in the rain. The semi-final of the girls' championship singles was reached, when Miss P. Howe defeated Mias N. Bell, 6-0, 6-2. Results of the afternoon's matches are:— MEN'S HANDICAP SINGLES. Second Kound.—B.'B. O'Brien (15) beat L. France (owe 15), 60-50. LADIES^ HANDICAP SINGLES. Second Bound.—Miss D.
