ARSENIC ON APPLES
SITUATION AT HOME.
(UNITED PRESS ASBOCIAWOB—COFIRIGHT.) {AUSTRAUAH-NIW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received ICth January, 9 a.m.) LONPON, 15th January.
The National Federation of Fruit .Traders' Association spent the' whole of yesterday discussing the dilenlma resulting from the Health Ministry's prosecution of retailers selling arsenic-ally-affected apples. The federation decided to recommend retailers to wash their present stocks of apples, but refused responsibility for similar treatment of oncoming shipments, whether from Australia, Canada, Anieriea, or elsewhere. A committee representing all the Dominions interviewed the Undersecretary for Health this morning, and requested a definite statement of the Ministry's policy.
The reply practically announced the intention of the Ministry to rely on the powers of the British Port Health authorities, which are already sufficient to prevent the importation of deleterious foods. Therefore it did not propose special regulations to deal with-apples.
The committee is arranging to investigate samples of oncoming shipments.
