CARTERTON, This Day.

The civil business transacted at the Greytown Magistrate's Court during tha past year totalled £1173 15s lid, of which £980 9s was recovered. The criminal cases dealt with were as under, those of 1924 being in parenthesis:— Theft, number of cases reported, "7 (3); breaches of peace, 1; drunkenness, 8 (6); drunk while in charge of a.vehicle, 8 (6); vagrancy, 1; failing to mifntain, 3; failing to pay maintenance, 2.(6); breaches of the Licensing Act, 1 (4); breaches of prohibition orders, 5 (3); found on licensed premises, 12 (15). It is understood that the numbers of several motor-cars were taken during th« holidays, the drivers being under suspicion of speeding over the Rimutaka Hill.

The Key. C. J. Armstrong, of Queensland, accompanied by his daughter, arrived in Carterton yesterday on a two months' holklay visit to his mother, Mr». P. J. Armstrong, of High street.

In the croquet competition for the M'Kenzie Wristlets, Mesdameg Failbrother and Williams (holders), of the Featherston Club, defeated Mesdames Goodin and Neilson (challengers), of the Carterton Club, by 26-13.

Two births, three deaths, and one marriage, were the vital statistics for Grey town for December. For the past two years, the figures were:—42 (1925 35), deaths 19 (17), marriages 16 (10). Playing for the Bcnton Ferns on the Featherston Bowling Green, the holders, Sinclair and Rolls (26) defeated the challengers, Simpson and Ayre (17).

A start will be made shortly tar sealing the road from Chisholm's corner, in the Featherston borough, to Con's Bridge.

The Carterton Bowling Club has won the Wairarapa Centre tournament on three occasions, and was once runner-

up. Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., Carterton, for the year ended November, 1924, made the following disbursements:—Sick pax £321 10s Bd, lodge surgeon £326; 15s, maternity allowances £126, death claims (3) £360, benevolent grants to members £28; total, £1162 5s Bd. . In ad' dition £236 11s 7d was paid to the Grand Lodge consolidation fund. ■■ The financial membership stands at 292.
