A WAREHOUSE ORDER

TEAVELLER SENT TO GAOL,

The brief commercial career of a visitor to New Zealand was related in the Magistrate's Court to-day when James Reginald Bevcrnall, a traveller, with several aliases, answered to a charge of false pretences. Detective Walsh, who appeared for the police, said the accused arrived from Australia on tho 7th December, and four days later ho visited George and Doughty's warehouse and ordered £32 5s worth'of goods, which, however, he was not permitted to take away. On 29th December he opened an^icsount at the National Bank, Courtenay place, and deposited £4 10s. He informed the bank officials that he was opening a business in Willis street. The next day he" again visited George and Doughty's and purchased the goods by a cheque, which was later dishonoured. Of tho 43 yards of serge obtained, 26 had been recovered. "He is not unknown to tho police in different States in Australia," remarked Detectivo Walsh.

"It is quite apparent you have fallen into your old habits again, although you have endeavoured to live an honest lifo for the last five years," remarked the Magistrate to the accused.

A sentence of three months' ,im> prisonment was imposed.
