APPROACHING THE FINALS,

(81 TELEGRAPH.—mS9 ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, sth January. , At the chess congress, play in the third round of the finals commenced this afternoon. The fourth and last round will commence to-morrow morning. The results are as under:— " Round 3. M»ir v. Pihl (Ruy Lopez).—Moir adopted the Steinitz attack, in which he became very aggressive. Pihl was unable to resist the onslaught, and resigned on move 25.

Crakanthorp v. Erskine (a Double Fianchetto Game). —Crakanthorp treat- , ed the opening on original lines, and obtained a good position. Erskine did not defend with the best results, and got an inferior game, which, however, turned out very interesting. Erskine lost the exchange, and later Crakanthorp gave back the exchange to force a mate. Dunl^p v. Anderson (Sicilian Defence) .—Andereon transposed a move early in the opening, and this gave Dunlop an advantage. To stave off the attack Anderson gave up the exchange of rook for bishop, and a great struggle ensued. Dunlop won eventually. Barnes v. Stenhouse (Queen's Counter Game). —Stenhouse has won the exchange of rook for bishop and pawn, but the game is unfinished. ' ' The position now stands as under:— , Crakanthorp 5% wins. Dunlop 4 wins. Miller.—Kelling's sealed move lost him a rook, and he resigned without further play. Round 3. Purdy defeated Kelling. Davies v. Miller. —Unfinished. E. E. Hicks v. Fairburn.—Unfinished. The position of the competitors is as under: — Purdy 4 wins. Davies 2% wins. Keiling 1 win. Millei' 1 win. E. E. Hicks % win. Fairburn 0 win. The last round will commence tomorrow morning. The visiting delejiates were accorded a civic*reception this afternoon.
