GALE IN SAMOA
VESSELS ASHORE AT APIA
SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE
SOME LOSS OF LIFE REPOBTED. (tSmD PBISS ASSOCIATION—COPIRIOHT.) (Received sth-January, 3 p.m.) SUVA, sth January. Apia reports that a gale at Samoa on Ist January did much damage to plantations. Breadfruit trees came down in hundreds. The steamer Lady Boberts dragged her anchors and went ashore in the inner reef. Nelson's launch, the Siliafai, was wrecked whilst attempting to gain a safe anchorage. Seas destroyed the green light at the harbour entrance which was set on solid concrete pillars of 20 tons, set four feet in the reef. The gale raged all day, switching from south-east to south-west and back again. The roads are blocked with fallen trees and telephone wires are down. It is feared that the damage to the south coast was severe. Many fales are down. Some loss of life is reported. The greatest velocity of the wind was 72 miles per hour, and the-lowest reading of the barometer 29.14 inches.
