DEATH AT BORDIGHERA.
(mrm mss luocMTnm-rfomin*.); (uuna't miotAH.) BOME, 4th January. Queen Margherita, Queen-Mother of Italy, is dead. The death took
place at Bordighera after a short illness. The King and Queen of Italy were present. The late Queen-Mother was 74 years of age.
Margherjta Teresa Giovanna, Dowager Queen of Italy, was married to her cousin, King Humbert 1., on 21st April, 1868. She was a Princess of Savoy, the only daughter of the Duke of Genoa, and was born at Turin on 20th November, 1851. Three times was the life of King Humbert assailed by assassins, the third attempt being successful. The first occasion was in 1878. when a fanatic named Passante attacked him as he was enter* ing Naples with Queen Margherita. The occurrence upset for several years the health of the late Queen. The second attempt on the King's life was made by another anarchist, a man named Acciarito, near_Rome, on 22nd April, 1897, but this also was fortunately not successful. The tragedy of the King's life, however, was ended with his assassination by Gaetana Brescia on 29th July, 1900, at Monza. The present King of Italy is the only child of King Humbert and Queen Margherita, and was born at Naples in the Palace of Capodimonte on 11th November, 1869.
