THE AFRICAN NATIVE AGAIN
The following: letter has been received (says the "Morning Post") by; an official in Lagos, West Africa, from a native boarding officer in submitting a claini for kit lost:—''DeaVSif,—Tit accordance to the instructions received yesterday, I went on board .the tv? -—-— for the s.s. ■■ ■ ;.witha~yi^,w to finding whether the transhipment of nails could be made a matter of possibility. Owing to circumstances which were very unexpected, 'jt happened that the ».s. ——— struck tJi-J tug '— with a most curious resu't that the tug sunk. I was on boarl the tug; and as I could not but to make a desperate effort for my lifs's sake, I threw away my pair of boot* costing 355, one khaki helmet, P. anl T. uniform, and a raincoat. The incident being so awfully terrorising, I could not have dona better than to do away with these material* only to save something more inexplicably precious—Life, rt is regrettable, however, to mention that six souls were lost, and had it not been for God's unspeakable mercies, coupled with self-help, I would ' have, been counted among, the six souls who no untimely vacated the mundane sphere. In view of this, you may be good enough to recommend that the abova said materials be refunded, basing on the fact that the circumstances appertaining to the loss were quite inevitable. Yours truly .','
A new idea adopted by an American ' railway it proving useful on lines where trains do not run frequently. A train, on approaching a station, presses down an automatic switch placed near the rails, which liphts up the station lamps. A. similar switch some distance the other side of the station turns tfc«Jiglits
