Before the (Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), in the Supreme Court, Walter .Frederick M'Carthy .appeared for sentence for breaking, entering, and theft.' His Honor said it was not the prisoner's first offence. He had been released from prison in September after serving six months for breaking, entering, and theft. He had started off in 1918 with a conviction for theft, and had since been frequently convicted for drunkenness and ether offences. His Honour would recommend that he be sent to some farm. The sentence would be two jears. GISBORNE, 3rd DeceinSer. In the Supremo Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Reed, the four days' trial of Alfred James M'Gregor, on a charge of sheep-stealing at Hangaroa, was brought to a conclusion, the jury returning a,verdict of not guilty and accused being discharged. Charles Goon, charged with carrying on the business of bookmaker at liuatorea races, was found not guilty, and was discharged. A young Xativc, Wircmu Turci Hauiti, was charged with carnal knowledge o(l, or, alternately, indecent assault, on a girl under sixteen years of age. The jury, after a retirement of ten minutes, returned a verdict of guilty of indecent assault. I'nsonor was remanded for sentence. INVERCARGILL, 3rd December. In the Supremo Court to-day, George Francis Hughes was acquitted on a charge of aggravated assault. Edward John Hen cry, for having cari.;il knowledge of a. girl under l(i, was convicted and remanded for sentence.
