KEEN COMPETITION

WELLINGTON COLLEGE SPORTS

an interesting: gathering.

The annual athletic sports of secondary schools are usually eagerly looked forward to by the students and the parents, but there is, perhaps, no college sports gathering in the Dominion in which more interest is shown than that of the Wellington Boys' College. For years past, Sports Day at Wellington College has been a big affair, always largely attended by parents and old boys. Today, .when the 1925 sports meeting of the college is talcing place on the college grounds, the same enthusiasm is being displayed. There was a large gathering of spectators to witness the morning events, but this afternoon the attendance is much greater. The sports were to have taken place last week, but ■were postponed owing to the unfavourable weather. For the meeting to-day the conditions were very pleasant, and the track was in first-class order. There was a light northerly wind, and this helped some of the competitors considerably in the sprint events, very good times being recorded. In the past Wellington College has produced some vej-y flue athletes who have since made names for themselves on the track. In the events run ofi this morning there was ample proof that this year there are come very fine athletes at Wellington College. The junior competitors were particularly good, and two new recoi'ds were established. In the third heat of the 100 yds scratch under 14 years, A. F. Chorlton won in the good time of 12 l-ssec, breaking J. Heinemann's record, established last year, by four-fifths of a second. Another young runner, H. Avery, set a fresh record for the 100 yds scratch, under 15 years, which he did in 11 l-ssec. The previous best time for this event was 11, 3-ssec, put up by F. K. Styles in- 1023. J. W. Doyland registered good time in the first heat of the 220 yds handicap, under 16 years, winning the event from scratch in 25 2-ssec, which is one-fifth slower than the record for the distance, made by C. H. Jenkins in 1920. Amongst the senior boys, F. S. Ranison, H. N. Anderson, and Or. W. Bowse stood out prominently. Banison, who was the mainstay of the Wellington College senior team at the secondary schools' championships on Saturday, won the long jump handicap, open, with a leap of'l9ft s£in, and was second to Anderson in the open'22oyds champion-, ship, run in the excellent time of 23 2-ssec.

As is customary, several events were decided previous to to-day, and in one of these, the senior cross-coun-try run, 0. B. 1 Roberts- lowered G. P. Raymond's • record of 17min 36sec, established in 1916, by 20 3-sscc^-a great performance. ; DETAILED RESULTS.
